What can I possibly say about literature that has survived the upheavals of five hundred years? Obviously, enough people felt that it was enough of a good read to keep it in existence. All that is really left for me to do is to convince you that a book that would otherwise sound dry and boring (and maybe even preachy) is definitely worth your time.
A Pilgrim’s Journey The Autobiography of St. Ignatius of Loyola was transcribed by his secretary, Father Louis Gonzalez, as a result of several interviews with St. Ignatius. The autobiography is really a memoir of his journey from blood-lustful and glory-seeking soldier of Spain to humble and visionary soldier of God in sixteen years. Starting with his injury from a cannonball to his leg that led him to read several inspiring works of saints during his infirmary to his vision of the Mother of God and Infant Jesus that confirmed his new devoted course in life to his determination to study for the priesthood despite constant harassment from church officials made suspicious of any newcomers in the midst of the Reformation. Of special note is the development of his famous Spiritual Exercises and the beginnings of the Society of Jesus, whose followers are called Jesuits.
I’m neither Catholic nor a particular lover of Jesuits, but a ninety-page account of the life of a saint from the lips of a saint five hundred years ago was enough motivation for me. I was rewarded with the thoughts of a saint as he developed-- his doubts on his faith and visions of God, his immature understanding of the Gospels (once almost killing a man for daring to doubt the virginity of Mary after the birth of Jesus), and his humility toward those whom he guided and even the reader.
This is the brief autobiography of St. Ignatius. He had quite a life!
